This year Rachel’s birthday gift was a trip to Cornwall. As Rachel was already going to be in England visiting family, Jónþór flew out to meet her. We set off on a coach at 7:30. Not too early but little did we know that it would be another 14 hours before we would arrive. 14 hours!! to get from Hull to Cornwall (traffic around Bristol was to blame). Anyway, we arrived to our hotel in St. Mawes, had a late dinner and took a walk around the habour.

We woke to hot and sunny weather ready for a day at the Eden Project. It was a beautiful place and well worth a visit. The tropical domes were amazing and we spent a few hours wandering around, had a lunch of Cornish pasty and relaxed in the sun.

On the second day we caught a boat to Falmouth in the morning. We actually shared a boat with Alex Polizzi who was doing some filming in the area. Today was all about the food. We had fish and chips and then found a traditional English tea room for scones with clotted cream. Back in St. Mawes we visited the castle and explore the cute town with its cute thatched roof cottages.

On our last full day we began by visiting the Lost gardens of Heligan what an amazing place. These gardens where forgotten about after WW2 and hidden away until the 1990’s when they were restored. Here you can find potting sheds, walled gardens, wild flower meadows, rope bridges, the UK’s only outdoor jungle and lots of surprises along the way. Do not pass up the chance to visit this wonderful place. In the afternoon we stopped at the fishing village of Mevagissey (one of the filming locations for Poldark). We visited a small museum about life in the village in years past, and had a coffee in the parish church. The last stop of the day was to a beautiful church and graveyard, St. Just in Roseland

(one of Rachel’s favourite things to do). The graveyard has been called one of the most beautiful in the world. It is set in gorgeous tranquil subtropical gardens. A haven for all that visit, and a worthy place of rest. We found a stone hidden among the moss reading  “There is great beauty in old trees, old streets and ruins old. Why should not I as well as these, grow lovely growing old.”

For now it was time to say goodbye to Cornwall and head back to Hull. Thankfully the journey back was not quite so long. Thank you Cornwall we had a blast.
